About
"A collective is what does not stand still but creates and is created by movement"
Sarah Ahmed
We started as a very small Facebook group in June 2020 and have since expanded to 470 members, reaching LGBTQ+ islanders all over the world. Our ultimate aim was to unite enough people to walk on the Brighton Pride Parade (UK) representing the Indian Ocean. In this process we have connected a community at home and abroad, shown solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community in Mauritius, Rodrigues and Reunion Island and most importantly created new and lasting friendships with one another.
We have been both inspired and enraged by the individual journey's many have had in the community. This website was created as a means to provide a platform for more voices to be heard, to bring a hub where other LGBTQ+ islanders can share their art, journeys, activism or meet other people who understand. We are championing intersectionality on an unprecedented scale!
Mimi (she/her) is a Brighton based DJ and masters student and is supported by cultural studies scholar Gitan Djeli (she/her) on the literary section. We are looking forward to reading your works and hopefully curating thematic issues in the near future! Meet the other members soon!
